Black Forest – Home of the cuckoo clocks

When most people imagine the Black Forest, it is a vision of trees, nature and relaxation that fills the mind. But the Black Forest has far more to offer than that! There are many opportunities for enjoying culture and relaxation throughout the year.

he Black Forest region is not only home of the world-famous cuckoo clocks, the red pom-pom hats and the iconic farmhouses. It is also a region where you can enjoy the picturesque landscape during e.g. an easy paced hiking or bike tour. Make sure you include a stop at a Vesperstuben (snack place), where you enjoy a rustic “vesper” (fresh bread, Black Forest ham, regional sausages etc) to get some new strength for the rest of the tour.
But not only the Vesperstuben offer excellent food. The Black Forest region is famous for its hospitality and its excellent cuisine – not only in the renowned top restaurants of the region with their many crests, stars and cooking spoons will you experience the culinary excellence of the Black Forest, but a glance on the menu of a smaller village restaurant can also reveal a choice of excellent traditional Baden or Swabian dishes.
Those with an interest in culture should include a visit to the beautiful university city of Freiburg with the 116-metre-tall spire of the stunning minster. Stroll around the surrounding square, where a market is held every day except Sunday (you must try a sausage at one of the market stalls there) From here you can also admire the square’s main sights like the Historical Merchants’ Hall from 1532 with its deep-red facade and colourful corner towers, the Museum of Municipal History in the Haus Zum Schönen Eck from 1761, and the Alte Wache, now the House of Badensian Wines – certainly not the worst use for this beautiful old guardhouse!

Michael’s recommendations

The Black Forest is a mountain and tree covered region, dominated by small villages. There are not the usual highlights of the larger cities like Berlin or Munich, but a relaxed atmosphere and great food.

The area is well-known for a number of phantastic restaurants often in combination with a small hotel. Out of these I would like to recommend the Traube Tonbach which exists since 1789. Their restaurant Schwarzwaldstube is outstanding.

Be sure to plan ahead and book with us in advance, the restaurant has just around 10 tables which are usually fully booked.

Restaurant Recommendations

Their restaurant Schwarzwaldstube is outstanding. Harald Wohlfahrt one of Europe´s best chefs and the Schwarzwaldstube’s chef since 1980, was awarded three Michelin stars 25 consecutive years from 1993 until 2017, an outstanding achievement. In summer 2017 he handed over the responsibility for the Schwarzwaldstube to Torsten Michel, who has been working at Wohlfahrts side for 12 years. Their chef and Schwarzwaldstube restaurant in Baiersbronn have always received the greatest praise – for over 20 years now.

During his years of wandering, Claus- peter Lumpp passed through the best of schools, from Eckart Witzigmann to Alain Ducasse. Nevertheless- or perhaps because of this- he has developed his own signature: technical perfection with aromatic richness (almost opulence) that, with lean elegance, combines visual attractiveness and wholesomeness.

Douce Steiner awarded with 2 Michelin stars and her husband Udo Weiler serve excellent cuisine in a beautiful restaurant in the picturesque Black Forest.
