Jewish Life In Berlin – Private Tour (max 5 hrs)
Highlights:
New Synagogue, Bebelplatz, Jewish Museum and Holocaust Memorial
Your English speaking guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel for your private tour on Jewish Life in Berlin.
This tour through Jewish Berlin will first take you to the area around the New Synagogue in Oranienburger Street where we find different Jewish institutions from the past such as the first cemetery, an old-age people’s home which became a deportation centre, the Jewish boys’ school, an orphanage, a hospital, an orthodox rabbinical seminary, the liberal academy for Judaism, all of which represent the variety of Jewish life before the Nazi Period.
Continuation of tour with a short stop at Bebelplatz, site of the Burning of Books.
The tour continues to the Jewish Museum, which is the most significant example of contemporary architecture in Berlin.
The collection of the Jewish Museum Berlin is based on the Berlin-focused resources of the former Jewish Department of the Berlin Museum. These resources have now been extended and enlarged in order to provide a comprehensive picture of German-Jewish history, rather than solely that of Berlin’s Jews.
For this purpose, they are collecting contributions spanning all materials and epochs, from artworks to everyday objects. Whether family photos, or documents, ceremonial objects, paintings, photographs, graphics, sculptures, architectural models, postcards, furniture, rare books, scripts, textiles, porcelain, Torah ornamentation, portraits, pictures of synagogues, the Jewish Museum is in search of anything that helps to tell the moving story of Jewish-German history.
After visiting the Jewish Museum drive to the Holocaust Memorial.
The memorial is situated in the centre of Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate. It shall be a central place for remembrance of the murdered victims and a place of warning. Additional to the field of steles designed by architect Peter Eisenman, the Memorial is complemented by an underground Information centre about the victims to commemorate and historic memorial sites.
