Private Sound of Music Tour – 60 years anniversary

Two pieces of music came out of the same few kilometres of Salzburg countryside: a carol written in a village schoolroom in 1818 and sung for the first time on Christmas Eve, and a film score that has never left the repertoire since 1965. This full day puts both in one itinerary, hosted throughout by Baron Peter von Wertheim, a descendant of the von Trapp family, who guides, plays the violin and takes the organ bench in the church at Arnsdorf. The Silent Night region

North of the city, the Salzach flats hold three places that matter. At Arnsdorf the schoolhouse where Franz Xaver Gruber taught still stands beside the church, and there the Baron plays an organ intermezzo to an audience of your clients alone. Oberndorf, a little further downstream, is where the carol was first performed in 1818; the original church was lost to flooding and a small memorial chapel now stands in its place, and the day closes there with a violin piece. Between them the countryside is flat, quiet and unvisited, which is a large part of why the afternoon works.

The film locations, told from inside the family

The other half of the day covers the original filming locations in and around Salzburg, with the family’s own version of events attached to them – what was filmed where, what the studio changed, and what happened to the von Trapps after they left Austria. At the gazebo the violin comes out for Edelweiss and the party sings along if it feels like it. Sixty years after the film’s release, this is the closest thing to a first-hand account still available, and it is a markedly different experience from a coach with a soundtrack.
