Private Christmas market walking tour Salzburg

Salzburg in Advent is a compact problem: four or five markets inside a small old town, all of them busiest in the two hours after dark, and a set of squares that were never designed for the number of people now standing in them. Two and a half hours with a private guide solves it. Your clients walk the markets in the right order, hear what they are actually looking at, and finish in the dark with the fortress lit above the roofs.

Where the walk goes

The centrepiece is the Christkindlmarkt spread across Domplatz and Residenzplatz in front of the cathedral, a market with a documented ancestry running back to the late Middle Ages and one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. From there the route crosses the river to the smaller market on Mirabellplatz beside the palace gardens, which is quieter, more local and better for anyone who wants to buy rather than photograph. Depending on the day, the guide adds the market on the fortress rock or the one in the courtyards at Hellbrunn on the southern edge of the city. In between come the stalls the guests would walk past: the wax-worker, the wood-carver, the maker of straw stars.

What the guide adds

Without a guide a Christmas market is a row of huts. Season, weather and booking

The markets open in the second half of November and the season runs through Advent, so the whole product lives inside about five weeks and the guides in Salzburg are committed early. December dates should be held as far ahead as your clients will commit. The walk is outdoors from start to finish in a city that is cold and often wet in December: warm layers, a hat and waterproof shoes with grip make the difference between a good afternoon and a short one, and the cobbles are slippery when it freezes. Weekends and the days around 8 December are the most crowded; a Tuesday or Wednesday is markedly better.
