Private Salzburg Walking Tour – 2 Hours

Salzburg was not a duchy or a kingdom but an ecclesiastical state, ruled by prince-archbishops who held both the crozier and the sword and spent the wealth of the salt trade on turning a river crossing into a baroque capital. Two hours on foot with a licensed guide is enough to make that visible, because almost everything they built stands within a few hundred metres. It is the standard first morning for clients arriving in the city, and the standard shore or rail stopover for those passing through.

Where the walk goes

The route usually starts in the Mirabell Gardens, crosses the Salzach and enters the old town through the Getreidegasse, the narrow street of wrought-iron guild signs where Mozart was born. From there it works through the linked squares the archbishops laid out as one composition – Residenzplatz with its fountain, Domplatz and the cathedral, Kapitelplatz under the fortress rock – and into the courtyard of St Peter’s Abbey with the arcaded cemetery and the catacombs cut into the cliff behind it. The Festival halls, the horse pond and the passages that connect the lanes to the squares fill in the gaps. The Hohensalzburg fortress is above the whole route as a constant reference point.

Who it suits, and what to add

It suits arriving guests, short stopovers, older parties and anyone who wants the city explained before exploring it alone. The distance is short and flat, but the surface is cobbled throughout and the lanes are crowded from late morning in summer, so an early start is worth taking.
