Melk Abbey

The day’s centrepiece is the Benedictine abbey of Melk, founded in 1089 and rebuilt in the eighteenth century into one of the great baroque statements of Central Europe. It sits on a rock above the river and is visible long before you arrive. Inside, your clients see the imperial rooms, the marble hall and the library, whose ceiling frescoes and roughly eighty thousand volumes are the reason most visitors come. Duernstein and Krems

From Melk the route follows the valley downstream to Duernstein, a small fortified wine town of white and blue church towers, defensive walls and battlement turrets, beneath the castle ruin where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner on his way home from the Third Crusade. There is time to walk the single main lane and, if your clients wish, to taste at a local winery. The return to Vienna passes through Krems, a centre of the wine, salt and iron trades since the tenth century and today the cultural anchor of the lower Wachau.
