Oberammergau 2030: The Advisor’s Timeline, Starting Now

The next Oberammergau Passion Play runs from 18 May to 6 October 2030. Tickets are not expected to reach the market until around 2028, and they are released in a fixed order — group allocations first, hotel-and-play packages second, individual seats last. Advisors who intend to deliver 2030 need a ground partner chosen well before the first allocation is offered.

Four years out sounds absurdly early for a leisure booking. For this one event it is roughly the right moment, and the reason is structural rather than commercial: a village of around five thousand people hosts several hundred thousand visitors across five months, once a decade. Everything about it is allocated, not sold.

What the Passion Play is, briefly

In 1633, during an outbreak of plague, the villagers of Oberammergau vowed to perform the Passion of Christ every ten years if the deaths stopped. They performed it first in 1634 and have kept the vow, with interruptions, ever since. The cast is drawn entirely from the village — participation requires residency or birth there — and runs to around two thousand people including the choir and orchestra. Every decade the production is rebuilt from scratch under a new or returning director.

Two points matter for how you position it. First, this is not a religious tour product, whatever the specialist operators’ branding suggests: it is a piece of living cultural heritage that draws a substantial secular audience. Second, it is genuinely once-a-decade. A client who misses 2030 waits until 2040.

The dates

  • Season: 18 May to 6 October 2030, per the dates published by the Oberammergau organisers and carried by the established Passion Play operators (passionsspiele-oberammergau.de; oberammergau-passion-play.com).
  • Frequency: upwards of 100 performances across the season, spread over five days in most weeks, with fixed rest days. The weekly pattern for 2030 has not been published yet.
  • Ticket release: tickets have not yet gone on sale. Reporting on the 2030 cycle points to a staged release from around 2027 to mid-2028, groups first (european-traveler.com; passionsspiele.info). No firm on-sale date has been announced.
  • Performance times: the play runs in two halves with a long interval for dinner, occupying an afternoon and an evening and finishing late. Curtain times come with the 2030 schedule.

Why the release order is the whole story

Tickets do not go on general sale. They are released in tiers, and by the time the last tier opens, the good dates and the good seats have already moved.

  • Tier one — group allocations. Blocks of seats contracted to operators and agencies, typically tied to accommodation. This is where the majority of a season’s inventory goes.
  • Tier two — official play-and-hotel packages. Seat plus accommodation in or near the village, sold as a unit.
  • Tier three — individual play-only tickets. What remains. In previous cycles this has meant midweek dates in the least attractive months, and clients who insist on a specific week in June generally cannot be served from this tier at all.

The practical consequence for a luxury advisor is uncomfortable but simple. If your client wants a specific date, or wants the play combined with anything other than a coach hotel, they need to be inside tier one or tier two. That means being attached to a partner holding an allocation, which means the partner decision is made in 2026 or 2027 — before there is anything to book.

The timeline, year by year

  • 2026–2027 — choose the ground partner and register interest. Nothing is bookable and nothing needs paying. What you are doing is getting your name onto an allocation list and establishing which weeks of the season you want. Ask any prospective partner one question: will you hold an allocation, and how do I access it? A partner who cannot answer that in 2027 will not have seats in 2029.
  • 2027–2028 — allocations and packages open. Commit to dates. This is also when accommodation across the whole Ammergau and Garmisch region begins to close for the 2030 season, which is why the hotel decision cannot wait for the ticket.
  • 2028–2029 — build and sell the programme. The itinerary around the play, not just the play. This is also when allocation deposits fall due; take the payment schedule from the partner in writing at the point you commit.
  • 2029 — final names, seat allocation, guides and vehicles. Guide and chauffeur availability across Upper Bavaria tightens sharply for the season; this is late, not early.
  • 2030 — operate.

Where the clients actually sleep

Oberammergau itself has a small stock of guesthouses, family hotels and private rooms — hospitable, well run, and not luxury inventory in the sense your clients use the word. In a Passion Play year the village fills first and everything in it is committed to package inventory.

For a luxury leisure client the realistic bases are Garmisch-Partenkirchen, roughly half an hour away and the only nearby town with genuine five-star hotels; the Ammergau villages and the Staffelsee; and, at a stretch, the Tegernsee or Munich at about ninety minutes. Munich works only with a chauffeur and a late return, because the play finishes late and there is no useful public transport at that hour. This is the single most common planning error in Oberammergau programmes: a hotel chosen on its own merits, an hour and a half from a theatre that empties at night.

The play is a whole day — plan the day, not the ticket

Clients read “a play” and picture an evening out. In practice the performance consumes the afternoon and the evening with a long dinner interval in between, and the dinner is not incidental — the village’s restaurants are fully committed on performance days and a table has to be held with the ticket. Add the arrival, parking and seating time at the front and a late transfer at the back, and the Passion Play day is a full day with nothing else in it.

Which is why the programme around it carries the trip. A five-day Bavarian itinerary with the play as its centrepiece sells far better than a ticket with two hotel nights attached: Linderhof and Ettal are within twenty minutes, Neuschwanstein is an hour, the Zugspitze and the Partnach gorge are on the doorstep, and the Ammergau woodcarving workshops give the play its context. Our five-day Oberammergau programme is that shape and will be rebuilt around the 2030 dates as they firm up. See also the wider private tour programmes across Bavaria.

What we can arrange

Accommodation across Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Ammergau and Upper Bavaria for the 2030 season, chauffeured transfers to and from the theatre including the late return, licensed English-speaking guides for the surrounding days, restaurant reservations on performance dates, and full multi-day programmes built around a confirmed play date. Why work with a German DMC on this: we are on the ground, an hour from the village, and we will be here in 2030. Register your interest now through our contact page for travel advisors — there is nothing to pay and nothing to commit to, and it is the only thing that has to happen in 2026.
