Munich and Bavaria – Eight-Day Private Journey Through the South Four bases in eight days, running north to south from…
View tourFive-day private Oberammergau programme: the painted village, the Passion Play Theatre, Ettal Abbey and Linderhof, ahead of the 2030 season.
Oberammergau has staged its Passion Play once a decade since 1634, when the village vowed to perform it if the plague passed by. The next season falls in 2030, and advisors who plan faith-based or cultural travel are already holding dates. This five-day private programme takes your clients to the village itself, to the two abbeys and palaces around it, and into the Ammergau Alps that frame the whole story. Performance dates, ticket categories and current trade rates for the 2030 season are published on our dedicated Passion Play 2030 trade portal.
The village is worth two days on its own merits. Its houses carry Lueftlmalerei, the frescoed facades painted directly onto wet lime plaster, several of them showing scenes that would be at home in the play. Woodcarving has been the trade here for centuries and the workshops are still working workshops rather than showrooms. A guided walk covers the painted houses, the parish church and the Passion Play Theatre, where your clients see the open stage and hear how a cast drawn entirely from residents of the village prepares for a five-hour performance across a full summer.
From the village the programme reaches Ettal Abbey, a Benedictine foundation whose baroque rotunda and monastic brewery sit ten minutes down the valley, and Linderhof Palace, the smallest and the only completed residence of Ludwig II, with its formal terraces and its grotto. Between the two there is walking – alpine meadows, easy valley paths and, for parties who want it, a longer route with height. The driving legs are short throughout, which is what makes five days here feel unhurried.
Bed capacity in and around the village is finite and the play runs only for one summer in ten. Advisors who wait until the ticket allocations are public are competing for the rooms that the tour operators have not already blocked. Running the heritage programme in a non-play year is also a legitimate product in its own right: the village, the theatre, the abbey and the palace are all open, and the crowds are a fraction of what they will be. It combines naturally with the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day excursion and slots into the eight-day Munich and Bavaria journey. Vehicle and driver arrangements for the alpine legs are described under our private chauffeured transfers and tours, and arrival logistics on the Munich destination page. To hold a specific performance date, request dates with one preferred option and two alternatives.
