Munich – Private Walking and Driving Tour of Munich

Munich is compact in the middle and spread out at the edges, which is why the half-and-half format works better here than a pure walking tour. Your clients walk the old town, where the streets are pedestrianised and the distances are short, and then take the car for the royal and museum quarters and the palace on the western edge. One guide, one driver, one continuous half day, and nobody walks further than they want to.

On foot in the old town

The walking section starts at Marienplatz, timed where possible for the Glockenspiel, and works through the New Town Hall square to the Frauenkirche with its two domed brick towers, the Asamkirche squeezed between two houses on Sendlinger Strasse, and the Viktualienmarkt, where the city still buys its food. The guide covers what Munich was before it was Bavarian capital, what the Wittelsbachs did with it over seven centuries, and how much of what your clients are looking at was rebuilt after 1945 – a question almost every guest ends up asking.

By car through the wider city

The driving section opens up the parts of Munich that a walking tour never reaches. Koenigsplatz, laid out as a neoclassical forum and later used for very different purposes, holds the antiquities collections and stands next to the museum quarter. Ludwigstrasse runs north as a single planned axis to the university and the Siegestor. Beyond it the route reaches the Englischer Garten, larger than Central Park, and finishes at Nymphenburg Palace, the summer residence of the Bavarian rulers, with its canal, its park and its long baroque frontage.

How the tour is put together

• Typically three to four hours, private, with a licensed guide and a separate driver in a sedan or van
• Start at your clients’ hotel, at a cruise or rail arrival, or at Munich Airport
• The balance between walking and driving is set on the day according to weather and how the party is holding up
• Interior visits are optional extras; the base tour is exterior and street-level
• Admissions to Nymphenburg, the Residenz and the museums are quoted separately

Best for, and what comes next

This is the standard orientation day for first-time visitors, and the right choice for parties with a mix of ages and walking abilities, because the vehicle is never more than a few minutes away. Guests who already know Munich usually skip it in favour of something narrower. From here the obvious second day is out of town on the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof excursion, while clients who would rather go deeper into the city itself take the Munich centre tour for foodies the following morning.
