Private Vienna Walking Tour – 2 Hours

Vienna’s Inner City was the administrative heart of an empire of fifty million people, and almost all of it still stands within a twenty-minute walk. Two hours on foot with a licensed guide is the most efficient introduction there is: the imperial palace complex, the squares behind it, the library and the crypt where the Habsburgs are buried. It works as a first morning for clients who have just arrived, and as a final orientation for those about to explore on their own.

Where the walk goes

The route works through the Hofburg, the winter residence that grew wing by wing over six centuries and never quite finished, and out onto Heldenplatz, the great unbuilt half of a forum that was meant to be twice the size. From Michaelerplatz, with its Roman excavations open in the middle of the square, the walk continues to Josefsplatz and the state hall of the National Library, one of the finest baroque rooms in Europe. The Albertina above the ramparts, the Neuer Markt and the Imperial Crypt beneath the Capuchin church close the circuit. Between the set pieces the guide uses the lanes – Blutgasse, the courtyards off Ballhausplatz, the passages between palaces – because that is where the city actually reads as a city.

How the two hours are arranged

• Meeting point at your clients’ hotel lobby if it is centrally located, or at the Gerstner coffee house opposite the State Opera on Kaerntner Strasse

What it does not include

This is an exterior and street-level walk. In two hours there is no room for a museum, and a guide who tries to add one will do both badly, so the interiors are treated as a separate decision: the Imperial Apartments, the Treasury, the Albertina or the state hall of the library can each be booked as an extension with the guide staying on. The route is otherwise open to your clients’ interests. Guests who care about music are taken past the opera and the concert houses with the relevant detail; guests who care about the fall of the monarchy get 1914 and 1918 instead of Maria Theresa. Who it suits, and what to add

It suits arriving guests, cruise passengers with half a day in the city, and older parties who want the centre explained without a long programme. Total walking is under two kilometres on flat ground, though the surface is cobbled in places.
