Discover Dresden – Private Walking Tour

Dresden is a city that has been argued over twice: once when August the Strong spent a Saxon fortune turning it into a baroque capital, and again when Germany decided what to rebuild after the night of 13 February 1945. Both arguments are visible in the stonework, and a private walking tour with a local guide is the only sensible way to read the difference between what survived, what was reconstructed and what was left as it fell.

The route

The walk covers the Altstadt at close quarters: the Frauenkirche, raised again from its own numbered rubble and reconsecrated in 2005, with the darkened original stones set back into the pale new facade; the Zwinger, a pleasure palace built as a setting for court festivities and now holding the old-master picture gallery and the porcelain collection; and the Semper Opera House on the Theaterplatz. From the Bruehl Terrace above the Elbe your clients get the river view that gave the city its Florence nickname, and along the outer wall of the royal stables runs the Fuerstenzug, a hundred metres of Saxon rulers rendered in Meissen tiles.

The hidden bits

Beyond the postcard the guide works in the courtyards and passages most visitors miss, the story of the royal treasury and the Green Vault, and the quieter question of how a city rebuilds a centre that is also a memorial. Clients who prefer contemporary Dresden can have the Neustadt across the river added instead of a museum – a completely different city of nineteenth-century tenements, small bars, second-hand shops and street art, which survived the bombing largely intact and never received a single restoration budget.

Best time and what to add

Dresden works all year. Late spring and September give the best light on the sandstone; December brings the markets, when the private Christmas market walking tour is the better booking.
