Excursion to Burg Hohenzollern from Stuttgart

Hohenzollern Castle stands alone on a conical hill above Hechingen, roughly eighty kilometres south of Stuttgart and about an hour away by car. It is the ancestral seat of the dynasty that supplied the kings of Prussia and the German emperors, and it is still privately owned by two branches of that family. For clients who have already done the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche collections, this is the day that supplies the other Swabia – the one made of ridges, beech woods and a silhouette that looks invented.

The drive into the Swabian Alb

The route leaves Stuttgart’s valley basin and climbs onto the Swabian Alb, a limestone plateau of orchards, escarpments and small towns that most visitors never see. The castle appears from a long way off, which is the point at which most guests reach for a camera, so the driver plans a stop at a viewpoint on the approach rather than arriving straight at the car park. Depending on how the day is running, Hechingen below the hill or Bebenhausen Abbey on the way back can be added without stretching the schedule.

What your clients see at the castle

Three castles have stood on this hill. The first is documented in the eleventh century and was destroyed after a long siege in 1423; the second was built in the fifteenth century and decayed; the present one was raised between 1850 and 1867 for Frederick William IV of Prussia, a deliberately romantic reconstruction rather than a surviving medieval fortress. Knowing that in advance changes how your clients read the building, and a good guide says it at the gate rather than at the exit.

The ramparts run right around the hilltop and give a full circle of views over the Alb. Inside, the interiors are seen on the castle’s own guided route, which takes in the ancestral hall, the family treasury with Prussian regalia, and letters connected to the American Revolution. The two chapels sit a few steps apart – the Catholic chapel of St Michael, the oldest surviving fabric on the site, and the Protestant Christ Chapel – which tells you a good deal about how the family divided.

Who it suits, and what to know

It suits history-minded travellers, families with children old enough to enjoy battlements, and repeat visitors to Stuttgart who have exhausted the city. It suits mobility-restricted guests less well: the courtyards are cobbled, the rampart walk has steps, and the interior route involves stairs. Weather matters more here than in a city – the hill catches cloud, and on a grey day the views that justify the trip simply are not there, so we keep an alternative in reserve.
