What would Cologne be without the Rhine? The river made the city: for as long as there has been a settlement here it has been the artery along which goods moved, and it remains one of the busiest inland waterways in Europe as well as the spine of the German river-cruise trade. For visitors it does something simpler. It offers the one perspective from which Cologne composes itself properly – and that is the argument for putting an hour or two on the water into almost every itinerary.

From midstream the skyline resolves into a single picture: the twin spires of the cathedral, the green steel of the Hohenzollern Bridge behind them, the Romanesque bulk of Great St. Martin in the old town, the pastel gabled houses along the Fischmarkt, and downstream the ultramodern Rheinauhafen with its three inverted L-shaped crane houses.
