Heidelberg -Gourmet Walk

Heidelberg is usually sold as a castle with a town underneath it. This walk inverts that: your clients spend two to three hours at street level, moving between bakeries, delicatessens, wine merchants and a chocolate maker in the lanes off the Hauptstrasse, with a guide who knows the producers by name. It is a private tour, so the route bends towards what the party actually likes eating.

What is on the route

The old town is a single long axis with narrow lanes running off it, and almost everything worth tasting sits within a few hundred metres. A typical walk takes in a bakery for pretzels and the regional breads, a cheese and charcuterie counter, a chocolatier, and a wine merchant or wine bar for the Palatinate and Baden bottles that come from the vineyards visible across the Rhine plain. Between the stops the guide fills in the town itself – the university and its student prison, the Marktplatz, the Church of the Holy Spirit with its old market stalls built into the walls, and the Old Bridge at the end of the lane.

The selection is seasonal and depends on what the producers have that morning. Broadly it runs across bread and pastry, cured meat and cheese, something pickled or preserved, a sweet course and two or three wines, with an alcohol-free alternative always available. Portions are pitched so that the walk ends with a party that has eaten a proper lunch rather than nibbled at six things. Vegetarian is easy to accommodate; vegan and gluten-free need notice because several stops build around a single product.
