Hallstatt is a village of a few hundred people wedged between a mountain and a lake, and it gave its name to an entire period of European prehistory. It is also, on a summer afternoon, one of the most visited places in the Alps. Eight hours with a private driver-guide from Salzburg is what turns that into a good day rather than a queue: your clients arrive ahead of the coaches, go up the mountain first, and see the Salzkammergut on the way there and back instead of only the postcard.

The drive through the Salzkammergut

The route east from Salzburg runs past Fuschlsee and along the Wolfgangsee through St Gilgen, then on through Bad Ischl, the spa town where the Habsburg court spent its summers and where Franz Joseph signed the declaration that began the First World War. From there the road follows the Traun into the mountains and reaches the Hallstaettersee. The driving is part of the day rather than a transfer, and your driver-guide stops where the view earns it – the lake from the northern shore, the Dachstein massif at the far end – and gives the commentary as the landscape changes.

The village, the salt mine and the lake

The funicular climbs from the village to the plateau above it, where the salt mine has been worked for more than seven thousand years – the oldest known operation of its kind anywhere – and where the viewing platform hangs out over the drop to the water. The mine tour itself is optional and takes a good part of the middle of the day. Down in the village the walk along the lakeshore passes the Mullbach waterfall, which is the reason there is a settlement here at all: it powered the works and cut the terrace the houses stand on. The local museum sets out the Hallstatt period, named after the graves excavated on this hillside and dated between roughly 800 and 400 BC, which is the piece most visitors leave without understanding.

Season, crowds and suitability

May, June, September and October are the best months. High summer works if the day starts early; the village is at its worst from late morning to mid-afternoon. Winter is quiet and often beautiful, with the mine and parts of the mountain access closed. The village is small and the main lane is narrow, and the day involves a fair amount of walking on uneven ground, some of it uphill – guests with restricted mobility can still do the lakeshore and the funicular, but not the mine.
