Legends of the Rhine 5 days/ 4 nights

Between Bingen and Koblenz the Rhine cuts a gorge through slate hills so densely fortified that the castles are within sight of one another, and so densely storied that almost every rock has a legend attached. UNESCO listed the sixty-five kilometres of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley as a cultural landscape in 2002. This five-day private tour runs the length of it with a driver-guide, from the vineyards of the Rheingau to the cathedral city at the northern end.

The shape of the five days

• Day 1 – arrival in Frankfurt and transfer into the Rheingau; an afternoon among the Riesling estates on the north bank
• Day 2 – Ruedesheim and the Niederwald above it, the Drosselgasse, and the crossing to Bingen past the Mouse Tower on its island
• Day 3 – the heart of the gorge: Bacharach, the Loreley rock, St. Goar beneath the ruins of Rheinfels, and a stretch of the river taken by boat rather than by road
• Day 4 – Koblenz, where the Moselle joins the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck, and the Marksburg above Braubach, the only hill castle on the Middle Rhine never destroyed
• Day 5 – downstream to Cologne for the cathedral and the old town, or a return transfer to Frankfurt

The legends themselves

The stories are the reason the route is called what it is, and a good guide uses them as a way into real history rather than as decoration. The Loreley, the siren on the rock who wrecked the boatmen who looked up, is nineteenth-century invention built on a genuinely lethal narrowing of the channel. The Mouse Tower carries the tale of an archbishop eaten alive for hoarding grain in a famine. The castles themselves were tollhouses as much as fortresses; the robber barons of legend were, in the main, licensed. Your clients come away with the Rhine as a working river that generated both wealth and mythology.

How the tour is run

Everything is private: one vehicle, one driver-guide for the whole journey, four nights along the route rather than one base and four long drives. Boat sections are booked as scheduled sailings or as a private charter, depending on the party. Castle admissions, tastings and meals are quoted separately from the ground arrangements so the structure of the price stays legible. Season and variations

May, June and September are the strongest months; the vineyards colour spectacularly through October and many estates close to visitors in deep winter. Clients with only one day should take the day tour to the Rheingau wine estates from Frankfurt instead. Those who finish in Cologne can extend with a cruise along the Cologne waterfront or the excursion to Bonn and the Siebengebirge, which picks up the same dragon legends a little further north.
