Full day Industrial Heritage from Cologne

North of Cologne lies the Ruhr, the coal and steel district that powered Germany for a century and then had to reinvent itself when the pits closed. What happened next is one of the more remarkable pieces of European cultural planning: winding towers, coking plants and blast furnaces were not demolished but converted into museums, concert halls, galleries and parkland, and strung together as a signed route. The day opens with a guided city tour: the cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the defining Gothic building in Germany; the old town with its gabled houses and squares; and the Rhine riverfront, where the crane houses of the Rheinauhafen make the transition from cargo port to city quarter that the rest of the day is about on a larger scale. Two to three hours here is enough to leave the party oriented without eating into the drive north.

The route then heads north into the former industrial heartland.
