Oberammergau 2030 – See the Birthplace of the Passion Play – 5 days/4 nights
Oberammergau 2030 – Five-Day Private Passion Play Heritage Tour Oberammergau has staged its Passion Play once a decade since 1634,…
View tourPrivate full-day excursion from Munich to Berchtesgaden, Obersalzberg and the Eagle's Nest, with the Koenigssee as an alternative for the afternoon.
Berchtesgaden sits in a pocket of Bavaria that pushes into Austria on three sides, ringed by the Watzmann and reachable from Munich in a little over two hours. This private full-day excursion combines that landscape with the Obersalzberg above the town, where the Nazi leadership built a second seat of government and where the Eagle’s Nest still stands on its ridge at 1,834 metres. Both halves of the day matter, and a good driver-guide keeps them in proportion.
The route south leaves the motorway for the Alpine road as soon as it is sensible, running past Lake Chiemsee and into the mountains. Berchtesgaden itself is a working alpine town rather than a resort, with a market square, a former royal residence and a salt-mining history that made it wealthy long before tourism. Depending on how the day is built, your clients either walk the town centre with the guide or continue straight to the Koenigssee, the fjord-like lake below the Watzmann where electric boats have carried visitors to St Bartholomae since the nineteenth century.
The Documentation Centre at Obersalzberg is the honest way into this material: it explains what the site was, who lived there and what was decided there, without spectacle. From the Obersalzberg bus terminal a dedicated coach climbs the mountain road to the tunnel, and a brass-lined lift inside the rock carries visitors the last 124 metres to the building itself. It survived the war intact and has operated as a mountain restaurant since 1952. The view across the Bavarian and Austrian Alps is the reason most guests remember the day; the guide makes sure they also remember why the building is there.
This is the right day for clients with a serious interest in twentieth-century history and for parties who want mountains without a hiking day. Families with younger children usually do better with the Koenigssee and the salt mine and a shorter history segment – tell us in advance and we brief accordingly. Parties already staying on the Austrian side of the border are better served by the shorter Berchtesgaden and Eagle’s Nest day tour. From Munich it alternates well with the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof excursion as the second full day. Vehicle classes are set out under our private transfers and tours, the city programme on the Munich destination page.
